About Maker (MKR)

Maker (MKR) is the governance token of MakerDAO, the protocol behind DAI, the largest decentralized stablecoin. Maker was founded by Rune Christensen in 2014 and launched its mainnet in 2017, becoming one of the foundational protocols of DeFi. MakerDAO is in the process of rebranding as "Sky" with a new SKY token and USDS stablecoin alongside the existing MKR and DAI. The protocol pioneered the concept of overcollateralized stablecoins backed by crypto and now also incorporates real-world assets.

Maker Technology

MakerDAO allows users to lock collateral (ETH, stETH, wBTC, USDC, real-world assets, and others) into "vaults" and mint DAI against it. Each vault has a minimum collateralization ratio; if the collateral value falls below the threshold, the vault is liquidated. MKR holders govern the protocol by voting on stability fees, collateral types, debt ceilings, and other parameters. Excess revenue is used to buy back and burn MKR (now SKY in the new system), making it deflationary.

What Moves the MKR Price

MKR is one of the most established DeFi tokens with significant institutional interest. Daily spot volume on Binance, Coinbase, and Bybit typically ranges from $50-150 million. Key drivers include DAI / USDS supply growth, RWA TVL expansion, MakerDAO governance proposal outcomes (especially around the Endgame restructuring), and broader DeFi narrative momentum.

Maker (MKR) is available on major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken and Bybit. Always do your own research and only use regulated platforms.

What is the difference between MKR and DAI?

DAI is the stablecoin issued by MakerDAO, designed to maintain a $1 peg. MKR is the governance token of the protocol — MKR holders vote on protocol parameters and absorb potential losses (through MKR being minted to cover bad debt) or gains (through MKR being burned with excess revenue).

Is DAI fully decentralized?

DAI began as a fully decentralized stablecoin backed only by ETH, but over time MakerDAO governance approved adding USDC and other centralized stablecoins as collateral. This improved DAI's peg stability but introduced centralization risk. The Endgame restructuring aims to gradually reduce dependency on centralized collateral.

What is the MakerDAO Endgame?

Endgame is a multi-year restructuring of MakerDAO into a system of semi-autonomous "SubDAOs" focused on different aspects of the protocol. It includes the rebrand to Sky, a new SKY token (which can be converted from MKR), and a new USDS stablecoin alongside DAI. The goal is to scale the system more sustainably.
