About Stellar (XLM)

Stellar (XLM) was launched in July 2014 by Jed McCaleb (a co-founder of Ripple) and Joyce Kim. The Stellar Development Foundation, a non-profit based in San Francisco, oversees development. Stellar is purpose-built for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and asset issuance, particularly for unbanked populations and remittance corridors. Major partnerships include MoneyGram (XLM-based USDC remittances) and Circle (USDC native issuance on Stellar). XLM is the network's native currency, used to pay transaction fees and as a base trading pair.

Stellar Technology

Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a federated Byzantine agreement system that does not require Proof-of-Work or traditional Proof-of-Stake. Validators are organized into "quorum slices" that they trust, and consensus is reached when overlapping slices agree. Block times average 5 seconds with sub-cent fees. Stellar natively supports asset issuance (anyone can issue tokens including stablecoins) and includes a built-in decentralized exchange. Soroban, launched in 2024, brought Rust-based smart contracts to Stellar.

What Moves the XLM Price

XLM has high correlation to BTC and unique sensitivity to remittance and payments narrative. Daily spot volume on Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken typically ranges from $80-200 million. Key drivers include MoneyGram-related news, USDC-on-Stellar volume growth, CBDC pilots (several countries have tested CBDCs on Stellar-based infrastructure), and broader payments and stablecoin adoption.

FAQ

What is the Stellar price today?

The current Stellar (XLM) price is shown above in real time. It is sourced directly from major exchanges and refreshed continuously throughout the day.

How often is the XLM price updated?

The XLM/USDT price on this page is streamed live from our market-data engine and updates every second while exchanges are open (24/7 for crypto).

Where can I buy Stellar?

Stellar (XLM) is available on major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken and Bybit. Always do your own research and only use regulated platforms.

How is Stellar different from XRP?

Stellar and XRP both target cross-border payments, but Stellar is run by a non-profit foundation, focuses more on banking-the-unbanked use cases, has built-in support for asset issuance and a decentralized exchange, and uses a different consensus algorithm (SCP). Founder Jed McCaleb co-founded both Ripple and Stellar.

Can I issue my own stablecoin on Stellar?

Yes — Stellar natively supports asset issuance, so any account can issue a token representing any asset (USD, EUR, equity, commodity, etc.). The issuer maintains the off-chain backing and is responsible for redemption. Major examples include USDC issued natively on Stellar by Circle.

What is Soroban?

Soroban is the Stellar smart contract platform launched on mainnet in early 2024. It uses Rust as the development language and is designed specifically for predictable performance, low costs, and composability. Soroban brings programmability to Stellar without sacrificing the network's focus on payments efficiency.
