About Sui (SUI)
Sui (SUI) launched its mainnet in May 2023, founded by Mysten Labs, a company started by Evan Cheng, Sam Blackshear, and other former Meta Diem engineers. Mysten Labs raised over $300 million in venture funding before mainnet from a16z, Coinbase Ventures, and others. Like Aptos, Sui uses a customized version of the Move language ("Sui Move") but has significantly different architecture. SUI is the native token used for gas, staking, and governance, with a maximum supply of 10 billion.
Sui Technology
Sui uses an object-centric data model, where each on-chain item is a distinct addressable object with an owner. This enables single-owner transactions to bypass full consensus and execute in parallel via causal ordering, providing very low latency for simple transfers. Multi-owner transactions use Bullshark / Mysticeti consensus for ordering. Mysticeti, launched in 2024, achieves consensus latency under 400ms. Sui uses a Move-based programming model with sponsored transactions, enabling apps to pay gas on behalf of users.
