About Ethereum Classic (ETC)

Ethereum Classic (ETC) was created in July 2016 as a result of a contentious hard fork in the Ethereum community following the DAO hack. While most of the community moved to a new chain that reversed the hack (now called Ethereum), a portion remained on the original chain — adhering to the principle of "code is law" — which became Ethereum Classic. ETC retains the original Ethereum blockchain history and continues to use Proof-of-Work mining. The total supply is capped at approximately 210.7 million ETC.

Ethereum Classic Technology

Ethereum Classic continues to use Ethash Proof-of-Work mining (the original Ethereum mining algorithm before The Merge). After Ethereum transitioned to PoS in 2022, much of the Ethash mining hardware migrated to ETC, dramatically increasing its hashrate. ETC supports EVM-compatible smart contracts, though the ecosystem is much smaller than Ethereum's. The chain has experienced multiple 51% attacks in the past due to its lower hashrate, though security improved after the post-merge hashrate migration.

What Moves the ETC Price

ETC trades with high correlation to BTC and ETH. Daily spot volume on Binance, OKX, and Coinbase typically ranges from $80-200 million. Key drivers include broader Bitcoin / Ethereum market action, ETC's position as the largest PoW-EVM chain, mining economics, and rare moments when Ethereum disagreements remind markets of the "immutability" thesis ETC represents.

How is ETC different from ETH?

+

ETC is the original Ethereum chain that did not reverse the DAO hack in 2016, while ETH is the forked chain that did. Today, ETC uses Proof-of-Work mining, has a capped supply, and represents the "code is law" philosophy. ETH uses Proof-of-Stake, has no fixed supply cap, and hosts the vast majority of Ethereum ecosystem activity.

Is ETC still actively developed?

+

ETC has active development by ETC Cooperative and IOHK among others, but at a much smaller scale than Ethereum. Major upgrades have brought EVM compatibility with newer Ethereum features, though the ecosystem remains a fraction of Ethereum's in size and developer activity.

Has ETC been 51% attacked?

+

Yes — ETC suffered multiple 51% attacks in 2019 and 2020 due to its relatively low hashrate compared to Ethereum at the time. After Ethereum transitioned to Proof-of-Stake in 2022, much of the Ethash mining hardware migrated to ETC, raising the hashrate and reducing attack risk significantly.
