About Polygon (MATIC)
Polygon (MATIC) launched as Matic Network in 2017, founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic in India. Originally a Plasma-based scaling solution for Ethereum, Polygon evolved into a multi-chain ecosystem including Polygon PoS (a sidechain), zkEVM (a zero-knowledge rollup), Miden (STARK-based), and the AggLayer for cross-chain unified liquidity. Polygon Labs is the development company. The MATIC token is being phased out in favor of POL, which has expanded utility across the entire Polygon 2.0 ecosystem.
Polygon Technology
Polygon PoS uses a Heimdall-Bor architecture combining Tendermint-based checkpointing with EVM-compatible block production. Block times are around two seconds with sub-cent fees. Polygon zkEVM is a Type-2 zero-knowledge rollup that achieves bytecode-level Ethereum compatibility while inheriting L1 security through validity proofs. The AggLayer aggregates proofs from multiple chains to enable atomic cross-chain transactions, while Polygon CDK lets projects launch their own zk-powered chains.
