About Polygon (MATIC)
Polygon (MATIC) launched as Matic Network in 2017, founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic in India. Originally a Plasma-based scaling solution for Ethereum, Polygon evolved into a multi-chain ecosystem including Polygon PoS (a sidechain), zkEVM (a zero-knowledge rollup), Miden (STARK-based), and the AggLayer for cross-chain unified liquidity. Polygon Labs is the development company. The MATIC token is being phased out in favor of POL, which has expanded utility across the entire Polygon 2.0 ecosystem.
Polygon Technology
Polygon PoS uses a Heimdall-Bor architecture combining Tendermint-based checkpointing with EVM-compatible block production. Block times are around two seconds with sub-cent fees. Polygon zkEVM is a Type-2 zero-knowledge rollup that achieves bytecode-level Ethereum compatibility while inheriting L1 security through validity proofs. The AggLayer aggregates proofs from multiple chains to enable atomic cross-chain transactions, while Polygon CDK lets projects launch their own zk-powered chains.
What Moves the MATIC Price
MATIC/POL trades with high correlation to ETH and other scaling solutions. The token migration from MATIC to POL completed throughout 2024 and into 2025. Daily spot volume across Binance, Coinbase, and Bybit typically ranges from $150-350 million. Key drivers include AggLayer adoption, zkEVM TVL, partnerships with major brands (Disney, Starbucks, Reddit, Stripe have all built on Polygon), and broader Layer 2 narrative.

POL is the upgraded native token of the Polygon ecosystem launched in 2023 to replace MATIC as part of Polygon 2.0. MATIC holders can migrate to POL 1:1. POL gives validators the ability to secure multiple Polygon chains and earn rewards from each, expanding utility beyond Polygon PoS alone.
How is Polygon zkEVM different from Polygon PoS?
+
Polygon PoS is a sidechain with its own validator set and weaker security guarantees than Ethereum L1. Polygon zkEVM is a true zero-knowledge rollup that posts validity proofs to Ethereum, inheriting L1 security. zkEVM is slower and more expensive than PoS but cryptographically secured.
Why do brands like Starbucks use Polygon?
+
Polygon offers low fees, high throughput, and strong developer tooling, making it suitable for consumer-facing applications. Starbucks Odyssey, Reddit Avatars, Nike Swoosh, and Disney Accelerator all chose Polygon for its scalability, EVM compatibility, and active enterprise partnership program.
