About Arbitrum (ARB)

Arbitrum (ARB) is the largest Ethereum Layer 2 by total value locked, launched in August 2021 by Offchain Labs, a company founded by Princeton professor Ed Felten and PhD students Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner. The ARB token launched in March 2023 via airdrop to historical users, distributing roughly 12% of supply. Arbitrum is a permissionless optimistic rollup that inherits Ethereum security while offering significantly lower fees and faster transactions. Arbitrum One is the main rollup, while Arbitrum Nova uses a different data availability model for ultra-low-cost gaming and social applications.

Arbitrum Technology

Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup, meaning transactions are assumed valid by default and posted to Ethereum, with a 7-day challenge window during which fraud proofs can be submitted. Arbitrum uses multi-round interactive fraud proofs (the only optimistic rollup currently using this approach) which work even if the underlying L1 is congested. Stylus, launched in 2024, lets developers write smart contracts in Rust, C, and C++ in addition to Solidity. Arbitrum Orbit lets projects launch their own customized chains settling to Arbitrum One.

What Moves the ARB Price

ARB has exhibited high correlation to ETH and other Layer 2 tokens. Daily spot volume across Binance, Coinbase, and Bybit typically ranges from $200-400 million. Key drivers include Arbitrum total value locked, Stylus adoption, Orbit chain launches, sequencer revenue (governance has discussed distributing this to ARB stakers), and broader rollup-narrative momentum.

What is the difference between optimistic and zk rollups?

Optimistic rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism) assume transactions are valid and rely on a challenge window (~7 days) for withdrawals. ZK rollups (zkSync, Starknet, Polygon zkEVM) use cryptographic validity proofs that immediately verify correctness. Optimistic rollups are simpler and currently more adopted; ZK rollups offer faster L1 withdrawals but require complex cryptography.

What is Arbitrum Stylus?

+

Stylus is an upgrade that allows smart contracts on Arbitrum to be written in WASM-compatible languages including Rust, C, and C++, in addition to traditional Solidity. Stylus contracts can be 10-100x more gas-efficient for compute-heavy operations and enable broader developer participation beyond Solidity specialists.

How is ARB used?

+

ARB is the governance token of Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova, used to vote on protocol upgrades, treasury allocation, and ecosystem grants. Unlike some L2 tokens, ARB is not currently used to pay gas (gas is paid in ETH). Future governance may direct sequencer revenue to ARB holders.
