About Optimism (OP)
Optimism (OP) is one of the largest Ethereum Layer 2 networks, launched in December 2021 by OP Labs, a company spun out of the Plasma Group research collective. The OP token launched via airdrop in May 2022, distributing 5% of supply to early Optimism users and rewarding "positive-sum" actions. Optimism is the original optimistic rollup and pioneered the OP Stack, an open-source modular rollup framework now used by Coinbase's Base, Worldcoin's World Chain, Sony's Soneium, Mantle, and many other chains in what is collectively called the "Superchain."
Optimism Technology
Optimism is an EVM-equivalent optimistic rollup, meaning Ethereum smart contracts can be deployed unchanged. The OP Stack is the modular software stack that runs Optimism Mainnet and powers the Superchain ecosystem. Bedrock, the major upgrade activated in June 2023, dramatically reduced fees and improved compatibility with Ethereum. Fault Proofs went live in 2024, completing the transition to a fully trustless rollup. Cross-chain interop within the Superchain enables fast, native asset transfers between OP Stack chains.
